Now, I want a domain name for this lovely place, ie. ditching the .proboards bit. The thing is, I don't want to be spending my pennies on it if people aren't going to be active, so...

You could always try what I did with the Unofficial EA forum. It's a bit of work requiring you to post on another forum to keep it free. You start off with a subdomain like the proboards, but you have the option to upgrade to a top level domain for free. Well, "free," being that you need to post a bunch of messages to earn points and coins to exchange for it. It's a regular process where you'd have to earn 300 coins per year to keep it free. That's at least around 60 posts a year (assuming they are good enough to earn 5 pts a piece). The catch is you lose 1 point each day. So, you have the extra 365 points a year. I would say you'd have to make around 200 good posts a year to keep it free if you're going for a top level domain without having to pay for anything. Might just be something to consider. It's also not limited to one subdomain. You can create as many as you like as long as it stays within the hard drive space caps. It's not hard, but it's a bit of work.
